Experiencing Shakespeare, a FREE live field trip

Experiencing Shakespeare, a FREE live field trip to the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC. on March 6 at 1 PM CT with student interactives and FREE teacher resources from the IQ Learning Network at Alabama Public Television (APT). To obtain FREE resources and to get information about streaming the program, teachers should pre-register at http://www.aptv.org/Shakespeare/ Registration will assure that teachers receive information to stay up-to-date on developments about the field trip and the resources that accompany it.

This field trip will contain information that is appropriate for teachers and students at grades 6-12. It targets ELA, theater and performing arts, however, since the field trip is from an organization that is a library, students can see and learn more about the use of primary resources and primary source documents, an important skill addressed in many content standards.

Your public television stations will receive/have received an announcement from PBS and from NETA (the National Educational Television Association) about the availability of the program for on-air broadcast and resources but they probably need your encouragement to put it into their schedule. You or your local station can contact Libby Davis (ldavis@aptv.org ) to receive customizable marketing information that will allow the local station to be the provider of the service to teachers in their viewing area and state. If the local PTV station cannot air the live field trip, it is alternately available as LIVE STREAMING online but the on-air video will be better quality and we do recommend on-air as the preferred delivery method.

Both the on-air and the streaming will include Google Moderator and Poll Everywhere, two applications that will allow for student and teachers to actively participate before, during and after the field trip. Students and teachers can participate in a fun activity called “SHARE YOUR SHAKESPEARE” where students and teachers can upload a video clip of your Shakespeare performance for a chance to appear a “mash-up” of videos that will be shown during the "Experiencing Shakespeare" broadcast!

Besides the field trip and the interactives for students, there are FREE teacher guides and interactive Click-Learn-Teach modules that coach teachers and provide immediately useable classroom resources. Click-Learn-Teach modules are quick, easy to use online, interactive resources that are intended for teacher use exactly as the name describes…. Click on the site, Learn information about the topic and quickly find additional resources and teaching suggestions, then immediately Teach the topic in the classroom. The Click-Learn-Teach modules will help teachers introduce, explain, engage, and evaluate the Experiencing Shakespeare learning experience with their students.

We are very pleased to offer these new services to teachers and students everywhere and we look forward to participating with you during, before and after the events. In the coming months, look for announcements about other free virtual field trips from APT’s IQLearningNetwork.

The Coupled Ion Neutral Dynamics Investigation (CINDI) is a joint NASA/US Air Force funded ionospheric (upper atmosphere) plasma sensors built by the Center for Space Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas. This instrument package is now flying on the Air Force's Communication/Navigation Outage Forecast Satellite (C/NOFS) launched in spring 2008. The NASA Smart Skies education project has released a new mobileapp called Sector 33 that serves as acompanion piece to the LineUp With Mathgrades 5-9 classroom activity. In LineUp With Math, students learn tosolve distance-rate-time problems in the context of air traffic control usingprint-based workbooks and a web-based air traffic control simulator. The Sector33 mobile app is an extension to LineUpWith Math’s web-based simulator and takes on a game-like quality, givingplayers both a stronger role-playing experience and a greater problem-solvingchallenge. Sector 33 is designed to interest middle school and high school studentsin aeronautics-related careers while connecting mathematics, problem solving,and decision-making skills to the real world.

In Sector 33, the player role-plays an air traffic controller andguides two to five airplanes through a sector of airspace by changing theplanes’ routes and speeds. The challengeis to get the planes through the sector in the fastest time possible whilemaintaining proper spacing. The gameconsists of 35 problems divided among four levels (Trainee, Basic, Expert, andMaster), with the number of planes increasing with each level. Hints areprovided in the Trainee level to guide students to solve the problemsmathematically and systematically. UnlikeLineUp With Math’s web-basedclassroom simulator, Sector 33 isplayed in “live” mode without a pause feature, bringing more realism to thegame. Additional features include ascoring system and audio feedback from the pilots as route and speed changesare made.

Sector 33 is currently available for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch mobiledevices and is free and available for download from the App Store. An Android version of the app is currentlyunder development and will be made available in the Android Marketplace laterin 2012.
